Trying and getting nowhere? Riddled with doubt and worry? Dwelling on your mistakes?
Dealing with all of this can be overwhelming, but with the right support change is possible.
I help people who are struggling with general mental health concerns. I provide my clients with mental health therapy that makes sense to them, and that aligns with their goals, values, personalities, and lifestyles. I follow an evidence-based approach to treatment, but I also recognize that therapy is a personal process that looks different for everyone.
I think therapy is most effective when it’s both supportive and challenging. I am compassionate and understanding, but I don’t let people sell themselves short. My job isn’t to hold your hand while you suffer, it’s to push you to heal and grow so that you can solve your own problems.
If you do decide to talk to a therapist, look for the right fit.
My style is warm, non-judgmental, and direct. I don't sound like a therapist. I am professional, but I’ll be honest and let you know that I am not polished. I speak plainly, I curse, I laugh at bad jokes (and tell a few of my own), and I have a dark sense of humour. I don’t offend easily, so I welcome you to just be yourself with me.
Alison Harrington, MA, RP (Qualifying)
She/Her/Hers
I am a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying). I am licensed to practice psychotherapy in Ontario by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).
I graduated from the Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology program at Yorkville University in 2022. Prior to this I obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto majoring in Cultural Anthropology. I apply my knowledge of human history, our evolution, and culture to my practice of psychotherapy with clients. I am fascinated by people, what we believe, and why we do what we do.
Prior to becoming a psychotherapist, I spent 15 years working in the mining industry. I also volunteered for a crisis and suicide prevention line, answering calls from people in their most vulnerable moments.
I lived a full lifetime before I started this work. I played competitive sports, travelled, worked different jobs, got married, had a kid, failed, got rejected, and lost close family members. A lot of what I bring to the table is based on what I’ve learned through making my own mistakes and climbing out of holes I dug myself into. I do this work because I know life is short, and change is possible.
